The global Maritime fleet
In 2017, the global maritime fleet accounted for 107,749 sea vessels of various sizes and carrying capacity. These vessels consumed 361.117 million tonnes of heavy fuel oil.8
Table 2 was used to calculate the pollutant emissions of pollutants from ship power plants.
Below are the total emissions from the global marine fleet:
a) carbon dioxide (СО2) → 361,117,000 * 1.49 = 538 million tonnes;
b) carbon monoxide (CO) → 361,117,000 * 0.9 = 325 million tonnes;
c) hydrogen sulphide (H2S, in terms of SO2) → 361,117,000 * 0.001 = 0.36 million tonnes;
d) sulphur oxide (SO2) → 361,117,000 * 0.0345 = 12 million tonnes;
e) nitrogen oxides (NOx, in terms of NO2) → 361,117,000 * (6.9 * 10-3) = 2 million tonnes;
f) soot → 361,117,000 * (30 * 10-3) = 10.8 million tonnes;
g) hydrocarbons (CHx) → 361,117,000 * (20 * 10-3) = 7.2 million tonnes;
h) benzopyrene (C2OH12) → 361,117,000 * (7.6 * 10-8) = 0.000027 million tonnes.
